Nestled on the far eastern edge of the East MacDonnell Ranges, Ruby Gap Nature Park is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by those with an adventurous spirit. Located 150 kilometres from Alice Springs, this remote park is steeped in history and natural beauty, offering an unparalleled experience for camping and bushwalking enthusiasts.

In 1886, the tranquil riverbeds of Ruby Gap became the epicenter of Central Australia’s first mining rush. Explorer David Lindsay discovered what he believed to be rubies in the sandy bed of the Hale River, sparking a frenzied rush as buyers from Europe snapped up the glittering treasures. However, just 18 months later, the dream crumbled when it was revealed that the ‘rubies’ were, in fact, high-grade garnets. The ruby boom quickly collapsed, but the legacy of that rush remains etched into the landscape of Ruby Gap.

Today, Ruby Gap is a haven for those seeking a rugged and rewarding adventure. The terrain here is extremely challenging, suitable only for the experienced and well-prepared walker. Follow the riverbed and tracks upstream to the breathtaking Glen Annie Gorge, where the echoes of the past mingle with the pristine beauty of the present. The journey through this terrain is more than a physical challenge; it is a pilgrimage into the heart of the outback, where every step brings you closer to the essence of true wilderness.

Accessing Ruby Gap is an adventure in itself, this demanding route is a testament to the park’s remote nature, but the effort is richly rewarded with spectacular scenery and a sense of solitude rarely found elsewhere. Once there, several campgrounds await, offering a perfect base to explore the area. Remember, camping fees apply and campsites must be booked online before you arrive.

Ruby Gap is not just a destination; it is a gateway to experiencing the timeless beauty and rugged spirit of Central Australia. As you set up camp beneath the vast desert sky, the whispers of the past will surround you, telling tales of the ruby rush and the resilience of those who came before. Each day spent exploring the park's dramatic gorges and serene riverbeds is a step back in time, a journey into a land where nature reigns supreme.

So, are you ready to embark on an adventure that will awaken your senses and ignite your passion for exploration? Join us on a journey to Ruby Gap, where history and nature converge to create an unforgettable experience. Let the rugged beauty of the East MacDonnell Ranges and the storied sands of the Hale River guide you on an expedition of discovery and wonder.
